Validity is a measure of how well a test measures what it claims to measure. 1 Psychological assessment is an important part of both experimental research and clinical treatment. One of the greatest concerns when creating a psychological test is whether or not it actually measures what we think it is measuring. Internal validity. Internal validity is a measure of whether results obtained are solely affected by changes in the variable being manipulated (i.e. by the independent variable) in a cause-and-effect relationship.

This is important if the results of a study are to be meaningful and relevant to the wider population.

Validity psychology

The concept of validity was formulated by Kelly (1927, p. 14) who stated that a test is valid if it measures what it claims to measure. For example a test of intelligence should measure intelligence and not something else (such as memory). A distinction can be made between internal and external validity. Validity is a measure of how well a test measures what it claims to measure.
